Hi!

Wauw,  I neglected my online alter ego for two months now. I blame the exams, thesis and the like :p. Really, I’ve been busy and will be the next month. What’s on the agenda? Movies (Sex and the city  today :) ), Rock Werchter, official proclamation (I’m graduating the 5th of July) and just hanging out…

Enjoy the summer!

Kelly

MGMT May 1, 2008

Lately I’m really in to the Brooklyn band MGMT. Dancable, witty and lyrics that seize me right away. Their fabulous (sorry, lately I’m in to Sex & The City as well :) ) single “Time to pretend” captures emotions that some fellow students and myself encounter in our last year in college.

“I’ll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I’ll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I’ll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I’ll miss the boredem and the freedom and the time spent alone.”

It seems that we’re on the verge of true adulthood. Twenty something years old, graduating in June (if everything goes as planned :) ) and then what? It’s frightening as hell, but also really exciting…

There is however one major event already planned in my post-university life: Rock Werchter (from the 3rd of Juli until the 6th). MGMT will be there as well, WOOHOO!

Film history April 17, 2008

This semester I’m taking a course in film history. This implies I have to watch several classics a week, ooh what a sacrifice :)

In the last couple of weeks I’ve seen:

· Der Letzte Mann (1924): This is a  typical German Kammerspiel drama, directed by Murnau. Although, the film’s story isn’t much of a specialty, it is the innovative use of camera movement that makes Der Letzte Mann so important to the history of film. It was the first film in history to move its camera backward and forward, as well as up and down and from side to side. The subjective camera, this is when the lens becomes the eyes of the film protagonist, is also remarkable.

· Pantserkruiser Potemkin (or Battleship Potemkin) (1925): intriguing film with exciting montage by a genius of the modern cinema Sergei Eisenstein. This film needs no introduction, it’s a classic.

· The Gold Rush (1925): Comical movie not only starring Charlie Chaplin, but also directed by Chaplin. It’s an easy going film witch classic jokes that will be repeated throughout the entire film history.

· Der Blaue Engel (1930) – directed by Josef von Sternberg: This is one of the first films accompanied by sound. It’s tragic film about the degradation of a professor who falls in love with the dancer Lola Lola. Lola’s song “Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss auf Liebe eingestellt” became a true hit.

· The Philadelphia Story (1940): A witty, romantic film with an amazing cast directed by George Cukor. Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart perform excellently in this picture.

· The Seventh Seal (1957):  this enormously dark picture by Ingmar Bergman celebrates its 51th birthday this year. The film is however timeless because of its existential theme: the meaning of life. There are some surprising characters in this picture: for example a frightening personification of death. An intense film, if you ask me…

· Closely watched trains (1966) : a film from Czechoslovakian director Menzel. Basically it’s a film describing a young railway station apprentice’s embarking on a self-discovering journey. This young man is confronted with love, war, adventure and … frustration.

Other films on the agenda are: Le Quai des Brumes, The magnificent Ambersons, Accattone, The night of the hunter and L’Ascenseur pour l’échafaud. I’ll try to discuss them here as well. If you think there are any classics I should definitely add to my “to see” list, let me know!

Okay, keeping this weblog up to date isn’t really a sinecure… London was great by the way :) and the analysis of the historical integrity of Dr. Strangelove is working out great at the moment (our professor audiovisual communication even complimented me on my adult writing style, hihi).

Anyways, what have I been up to lately? Well, college is asking a lot of effort this year. I’m in my master year so I have to write a thesis. I’ll discuss user-generated content in the future (in the semantic web). Once I start writing about it, I’ll post some of my thoughts on the subject right here! Hopefully now I’ll succeed in writing on my blog now and then, I’ll do my very best :)

Hi again July 16, 2007

Wouw, it’s been 2 months since my last entry. Shame on me, but you probably know how it goes… busy with school and the upcoming holiday :)

Well, I’m glad to pronounce I graduated as a bachelor communication sciences, I was soooo euphoric with my results (several 16’s and 18’s on 20) Woehoe :) . And the vacation started off great with 4 days of live music on Rock Werchter. Musical highlights this year were (in my opinion): Muse, Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, Queens of the stone age, Arctic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, Goose, Interpol and Incubus. Also worth mentioning was our gigantic tent; really… it was “embarrassing” HUGE ;) and maybe the most embarrassing about the tent was that we couldn’t ‘construct’ it ourselves (we = me and two (female)friends) and we had to ask some help from several guys on the camping. Jezus, what a start :)

Furthermore, my family and I have been to Barcelona on a city trip. It was the third time I visited the city and it’s still a treat for the eye and a guarantee for a chill holiday. The hotel we stayed in for 5 days (Hotel Jazz) is a golden tip. As their own website states, the hotel really has a privileged location. It’s right in the centre of the city.

Well, that was a short update on my life…

Thanks for reading,

Kelly

Haaidie people,

“What has she been up to?” you might be asking yourself after my absence for several weeks already. Well, I just had an Easter Break and schoolwork was put on a hold a bit because I reaaaally needed a holiday. Furthermore, we’ve (Evelyne: my partner in crime for our English course and I) fulfilled our mission to create an own website on Online Communities. You can check it out on: http://www.kuleuven.be/iccp/iccp01. It’s pretty basic, but to be honest: I’m proud of our accomplishment :) .

And what’s on the agenda for the next weeks: studying, a blitz visit to Finland, exams, and tonight a cocktail party I’m organising to celebrate my birthday: Margerita, Pina Colada, Cuba Libre,… name it and I’ll shake it ;) I hope it will be fun!

Welcome to my weblog Miss Greenman and dear classmates,

And … surprise for you Evelyne, our “wonderful” picture put online for the whole world to discover! Please forgive me… ;)

Anyway, this is an example of how a new blog entry on a blogsite looks like. I posted it yesterday evening – so it’s the most recent blog-entry- and you can read it on top of my site (the reverse chronological order I already mentionned, well hopefuly I mentionned it, otherwise I might have had a blackout!!).

Enjoy our  presentation!

One more to go… January 27, 2007

Filed under: School — Kelly Van den Bleeken @ 7:39 pm

Yesterday I had my second exam, and so now the end is near… ;) One more exam to go, next friday, culture sociology, interesting but not easy. By the way, the exam of cultural studies dealing with the virtual identity in online communities went well (I think). But that’s all for now, for the next 2 à 3 hours I’ll be a passive cough potato :) .

enjoy the weekend
